I  grew up in South Africa when the likes of  Shaun Pollock, Brett Lee, Glen McGrath, Adam Gilchrist  and Ricky Ponting, to name a few, were on fire. But Brett Lee was who I aspired to be. He was a quick and aggressive bowler but in saying that he always made sure the batsmen were ok if they got caught in the firing line. This showed not just his talent but his sportsmanship, two elements I think are important to being a professional sportsman.

Cricket has been my passion since a little boy, with the above players having a big influence on it. But sport has also been in my family with members having represented their province as well as South Africa. Sport is in my blood.

During my schooling years, I played Provincial hockey and cricket but at the age of 17 I realised that cricket was my ultimate passion and I wanted to take it all the way to becoming a pro-player. I represented South Africa U18's and then went on to play for TUKS university. It was during these years that I was pushed to reach my goals and I was signed with the Kwa-Zulu Natal Inland team on a semi-professional contract. During my time with Inland I was offered a 'Rookie' contract by the Dolphins franchise where I got my 10fer against the Lions. I then went on to be contracted by Surrey County Cricket for 3 years and then by Yorkshire County Cricket from 2019-2022.

All young cricketers hear about the county system and dream about being involved in the set up. I have been so privileged to play in two of the biggest counties in the UK and I have played against and along side some of the worlds biggest names. To say I felt a little bit intimidated was an understatement. I got to sit beside the worlds best and learned so much from them, it was an INCREDIBLE experience! I absolutely loved the game but in my honest opinion, I could have been better at it all. Hind sight is an amazing thing. I have had time to look back at my career and there are so many lessons I am learning about who I was, what i did and how I could have been better.

When you are in a situation, you don’t ever have time to actually stop and sit on the outside to look in. It gives so much more perspective and allows you to learn and analyse far better. I hope that what i've been able to gain through that process of learning, I can pass on to others!
